Just before Le Burger week, I created THE PEG & PLANTS BURGER featuring @azraskitchen a gluten-free vegan chickpea patty and 100% local products.

I topped @azraskitchen's chickpea patty with Cranberry Wine @smakdabmustard (which aparebtly has anchovies so the vurger almost entirely plant-kbased), @flora_and_farmer Fermented Radishes from @preserve_store, @fresh_forage Red Radish microgreens, @jayaspreserves Spicy Pickled Carrot, and @jonathansfarm tomatoes, nestled within @breadbox.sourdough Focaccia (tomatoes and bread bought at @wolseleyfarmersmarket.)

@bagelsmith_wpg offers freshly baked Montréal-style bagels and flavoured schmears for order online at 8pm every Sunday. My favourite way to eat bagels is with a good cream cheese, in this case their caramelized onion schmear, topped with Atlantic lox from @gimlifish. Served with a spinach salad topped with @flora_and_farmer beets, @fresh_forage microgreens, and @manitobaharvest hemp hearts.

I usually prefer New York-style bagels after many trips to visit family in New York and New Jersey. I only discovered Montreal-style a few years ago. With a crispy crust, dense chewy interior, a larger hole in the center, and a slightly sweet flavour, many consider Montreal superior over New York.

@bagelsmith_wpg's take on Montreal-style bagels have been a hot item over the past couple of months, selling out online within a few minutes. It took me five weeks to finally make it through to order a dozen bagels as well as a couple of schmears (cream cheese), caramelized onion and maple cinnamon. They were worth the wait! I loved their freshness, the crispy texture, slight sweetness, and especially the toppings on both sides of the bagel. They paired well with both the savoury and sweet schmears.

Bagelsmith has now increased production to offer delivery on three days and have also added plain bagels to their roster as well as more schmear flavours. Last week they still had bagels available for order on Monday morning, but I would still suggest setting an alarm for 8pm on Sunday night, just in case.

Life hack: If you can't finish a dozen bagels, cut them in half first then freeze. When ready to eat, toast lightly from frozen.

@azraskitchen is a Winnipeg business that specializes in plant-based vegan & gluten-free products. I first tried their chickpea patties at @lovelocalmb's annual food & beverage event. A couple of weeks ago I received different flavours of their chickpea patties. Easily served in a burger or wrap or more, Azra's chickpea patties are versatile and flavourful with South-Asian spices. They are available in regular or spicy, and are hearty protein & fibre-rich alternatives to meat and bread.

Our local food community needs us more than ever. I still shop at box stores (the bun is Villagio bought at the Shoppers down my street) but I try to buy my staples from local shops and producers. I've gotten to know the growers, sellers, and makers of my food: Michelle & Troy from Fresh Roots Farm; Kim from Preserve Store / Flora & Farmer; Joel from @fresh_forage. Small businesses are not faceless corporations. They are run by real people with real bills and they have been hit hard by the COVID-19.

But many Manitoba businesses have persevered by adapting their practices to better serve their customers: @diversityfoodservices offers delivery of meals and groceries, including meat, produce, and dry goods; @preserve_store offers pre-ordered pick-up and delivery of @flora_and_farmer and other Manitoba makers; @fresh_forage offers free delivery and includes free samples; @freshrootsfarmmb has streamlined their egg-share and meat-share programs while offering an online store with monthly pick-up.
